How To End Your Shoulder Pain From: Peter G Cronje P.T. Re: "Fixing" your shoulder... Dear fellow shoulder pain sufferer, Are struggling to raise your arm due to sharp pain in your shoulder or unable to sleep at night because of throbbing and aching in your shoulder joint? Chances are good its because of shoulder impingement. This condition can go by many different names: Frozen shoulder Adhesive Capsulitis Rotator Cuff Tendonitis Shoulder Impingement Syndrome A few months ago I could not hit a tennis ball or throw a ball to my son. I had sever pain reaching overhead or trying to reach up behind my back. FELT like my shoulder was stuck. It was really frustrating... When I raised my arm and rotated it in a certain way I would get a sharp stabbing burning pain in my shoulder radiating down my arm. Since I am a physical therapist, I got so paranoid that I thought I tore my rotator cuff and went for an MRI. Good news came back, no tear but some early signs of arthiritis. This was a wake up call for me and prompted me to use very specific exercises I usually give to my shoulder pain patients to end shoulder pain, this time I was the patient :-) Long story short, I can now play tennis and raise my arm without any restriction. Turns out the pain I was having is a condition called "shoulder or rotator cuff impingement", very common and most of our shoulder pain can be traced to this condition, even yours. What is shoulder impingement?
When your rotator cuff gets "jammed" (see image below) between 2 bones in your shoulder joint (the acromion and humerus head) it sends a jolt of pain telling you to stop it! This "jamming" of the rotator cuff tendon is known as a shoulder impingement, or frozen shoulder. Usually with lifting or turning your arm to the outside cause pain, even inability to reach your arm behind your back in many cases. This is a picture of why you have pain when you raise your arm or try and throw a ball. This is abnormal and should not happen, I have some really great exercises that can help you avoid this from happening :-) Why does this "jamming", "frozen shoulder" or impingement in your occur? 2 Reasons: 1. Shoulder Muscle (Rotator Cuff) Weakness. 2. Poor Shoulder Posture due to tight muscles. As life gets in the way we get very tight and bent over in our posture. This causes us to lose strength in our shoulder and decreases the space in our shoulder joint leading to the pain you are feeling. Why do
most shoulder pain treatments "not work"?
You have to be very specific with performing the absolute correct exercises to "beat" this problem. Pick the wrong ones and you will cause more harm and increase the "pinching jamming" motion on the rotator cuff tendon that will eventually cause a tear and a chronic shoulder condition known as adhesive capsulitis. Seen
these
exercises?
They are terrible for someone with an impingement. You have to know what you are doing to avoid damage. More importantly, you must perform a series of very specific shoulder exercises that restore normal shoulder motion and strength without impingement. Have you been diagnosed with a partial rotator cuff tear recently? Most of us get this when we are in our late thirties and older. The rotator cuff gets fibrous, tight and our rotator muscles get weak. This leads to impingement and many times a partial tear. There is some good and bad news. The Good
news.
As long as the tear is not to advanced you can maintain good shoulder positioning and decrease your pain and avoid surgery. The Bad news: If the tear is really "large", or the strength in your arm does not return to your shoulder with exercises, you will most likely need surgery. Unfortunately a tear does not heal, I do believe if it is minor you can keep it at bay and go on with life without it bothering you to much. So what is the Solution To Your Pain?
If you are in pain, imagine in the next couple of days lifting your arm with less pain, sleeping better with less throbbing and enjoying peace of mind that you are finally taking the right steps to end your shoulder pain and avoid surgery.
